The day begins with a trip to the famous Lingotto roof top test track - the track on the roof of the famous Fiat factory in Turin. We ascend the building in a convoy but sadly aren't allowed to go onto the track because of the bad weather. It really is strange to see a race track on the 6th floor / roof of a factory. The camber on the track is so steep I'm glad we're not rallying around the track in this weather or any weather!
The next leg of the rally is to take us to Monte Carlo, Monaco... In our infinite wisdom Gordon and I hatch a plan to take a short cut through the mountains. These mountains are not any old mountains, they're the Alps and what was meant to be a short cut turns out to be the longest cut in the history of rallying!
We arrive after most other teams, having faced 200m sheer drops, hair pin bends and torrential rain. Its like a 4 hour white knuckle ride and we're both very glad to reach Monaco. Before the rally starts we grab a quick lunch which is £75! We realise fast this is not the place to eat, drink or in fact do anything unless you have a private Swiss bank account! Sadly we don't and make a pact to budget until we reach our next detsination, Lyon! Sadly this plan goes a little awry later that evening in the famous Monte Carlo casino where we meet and chat to one of Gordon's footballing heroes, Davil Suker (the ex Croatian International and ex Real Madrd Player). He is incidentally playing with 1000 euro chips as if they're 5p pieces! Our rally position is apparently improving. The word after todays round is that we've secured a coveted top 10 spot. We retire to bed, poorer in pocket but happy we're doing so well for rallying novices! |
