Waking up early we join the other participants for breakfast. There are around 60 teams taking part this year - known as Jobbers! Everyone seems lovely, if not more than a little competitive. Some teams take part annually and they all know one another and have come ready to battle it out in the Italian Job again! We meet some other guys who are new to the Italian Job and a similar age so are relieved!!
After brekkie, its time to get the car through scrutineering - the name given to the road worthiness test carried out by the Italian Job Vehicle Technicians. The car had been serviced by B4BMW and A4Audi before we left so we have no worries in that department and as we expect the car sails through. We had failed to purchase a warning triangle and high visibility jackets though, which are apparently a legal requirement for Italian motorists so its a quick dash to the local shops to stock up before induction, where the rules and regulations are explained before the start of the rally! At the start line, cars line up in numerical order. We are team 38! All cars must cross the line 30 seconds apart. With the first car starting at noon we were 18 minutes and 30 seconds after them! Everyone sets their stop watches to rally time and it is crucial to start your stop watch excatly as you cross the start line as reaching each time check at exactly the right time (to a hundredth of a second) is where you can win or lose hundreds of points. Its all about precision. Sadly we're having a little trouble with the operation of our stop watch but we remain optomistic (as good Scots always do!!) The rally begins and we're off to Imola's Grand Prix circuit, the famous track where Ayrton Sena sadly died. Unbelievably there are still masses of fresh flowers laid weekly next to a Brazilian flag on the track alongside the first bend where he had his fatal accident. Quite eery. At the track we begin what is known as the first of our 2 special stages. These stages test your driving ability and precision car handling. Gordon drives throughout this part of the rally as we are tested against the clock carrying out tasks such as 'crushing plastic cups' with certain tyres and nudging cones in order (but without knocking them over) - harder then it looks especially when you only have 20 seconds!! We finish the day with 3 laps of the Grand Prix circuit. Pudsey loves it... he made a special appearance on the track and poses for photos - what a poser! Rally position at the end of the day is 20th out of 60 - we're delighted! |
