Day 6 - Challenge to reach Maranello via Modena |
|
The pressure is on. We're new to the Italian Job and yesterday we came 6th! We can't quite believe it especially as we have been lost more times than I can count and the stop watch is definitely wonky!
Todays challenge is to reach Maranello via Modena. Modena is famous for the Balsamic Vinegar it produces. I want to stop and buy some but Gordon is having none of it - we're against the clock and my female urge to shop is denied! We reach Maranello on time in fact with some time to spare so go into the Ferrari factory and have a look round. I consider shopping but soon discover that even a mug in the factory shop is £20 and a T-shirt is £50! In the afternoon we have to find the home of the famous Panini family - the people that have made fortunes from football stickers and models amongst other things. They have a private collection of classic cars that we are priveleged to be invited to tour. Its been a long day in the car, temperatures are probably the highest they've been - about 25 degrees - very nice! In the evning we have a black tie do at the hotel for all the Jobbers. We sit with 2 Lords and a couple who have entered all the way from the US. Its an interesting evening and Gordon does Scotland proud by wearing his kilt! |

Day 5 - Dam made famous in the remake of the Italian Job |
|
Today is a long rallying day. We are rallying all over the region surrounding Bologna. Its a day in the countryside, up hills, down mountains and again everything has to be times to a hundredth of a second. Some Jobbers wear their stop watches constantly and are obsessive about precision. We have come to the conclusion we are doing well, if not better than some of the others without this so continue with our confident, yet relaxed approach! Our friends, the other young guys who are new to this and are the team behind us (team 39) are also doing well - they are 10th!! (We're very proud, go Russ and Rich!)

Day 4 - Ducati factory in Bologna |
|
Day 2 of the actual rally and we're feeling optomistic. The car is great and I have to say I think the decals on our car stand out as the best in the rally by far! Having come 20th the day before we are pleasantly susprised. A lot of the Jobbers who come annually are behind us and we're not only new to this, I'm still having trouble with the stop watch!
Todays challenge in the road book is to navigate to the Ducati factory in Bologna. The factory is where the worlds greatest superbikes are made and there is a museum there we can tour if we make it on time! |

Waking up early we join the other participants for breakfast. There are around 60 teams taking part this year - known as Jobbers! Everyone seems lovely, if not more than a little competitive. Some teams take part annually and they all know one another and have come ready to battle it out in the Italian Job again! We meet some other guys who are new to the Italian Job and a similar age so are relieved!! |
